This bill establishes a special legislative commission to conduct a comprehensive audit and investigation into gun violence prevention funding in Massachusetts. The commission will be composed of members from grassroots and community-based gun violence organizations representing the communities most affected by gun violence. The audit will examine funding from multiple sources, including the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance, the Senator Charles E. Shannon, Jr. Community Safety Initiative, safe and successful youth initiative, youth-at-risk and primary violence prevention programs, and a neighborhood-based gun and violent crime prevention pilot program. The commission will analyze which census tracts have been most impacted by gun violence and where funds have been expended to address prevention. Within 180 days of the bill's effective date, the commission must submit a detailed report to various state officials and legislative committees, including recommendations about whether the neighborhood-based gun and violent crime prevention pilot program should become a permanent program within the Department of Public Health or be re-established in another state department.
