This bill establishes a 10-member commission to study the financial feasibility and capability of providing enhanced transportation options for Arlington and Lexington, specifically by evaluating two potential rapid transit solutions: extending the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) red line to include stops in these towns, or creating a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line along Route 2 from Alewife to the I-95 interchange with stops in Arlington and Lexington. The commission will be composed of 3 representatives from the House of Representatives (including 1 appointed by the minority leader), 3 senators (including 1 appointed by the minority leader), the secretary of transportation or their designee, the MBTA chairman or their designee, and 2 members appointed by the governor. The commission is required to complete a comprehensive evaluation of both transit options and produce a final recommendation, with the mandate to file their findings and recommendations with the joint committee on transportation within twelve months of the bill's passage.
