This bill amends existing Massachusetts law regarding student representation on school committees by expanding student voting rights. Previously, a student chairperson was a non-voting ex-officio member of the school committee. Under the new provisions, school districts will now be required to elect two student representatives who have full voting rights on all matters before the committee. These student representatives will be elected by secondary school student bodies prior to June 1st each year and will serve without compensation. While they remain subject to school committee rules and regulations, they are still generally excluded from executive sessions unless specifically permitted. Additionally, the bill establishes a broader student advisory committee with a flexible number of members, whose purpose is to support the elected student representatives by helping them perform their duties and connecting students with resources. This change aims to increase student participation and representation in local school governance decisions.
