This bill amends the Massachusetts retirement system laws to allow school nurses who are members of the teacher's retirement system or municipal/state retirement systems to receive creditable service for past nursing work experience. To qualify, a nurse must have at least ten years of membership service, and they can receive up to three years of additional creditable service. To obtain this service credit, nurses must pay into their retirement system's annuity savings fund an amount equal to 10 percent of their regular annual compensation when they first entered the retirement system for each year of service they want to purchase, plus buyback interest. Nurses must apply for this creditable service within 90 days of being notified of their eligibility by their retirement board, or within 90 days of the act's effective date for currently eligible members. This provision essentially allows school nurses to have more comprehensive retirement benefits by recognizing their prior professional experience in the nursing field.
