This bill amends Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 111, Section 8C to provide municipalities with more flexibility regarding water fluoridation programs. Specifically, the bill allows towns, cities, or districts with existing artificial fluoridation programs to end those programs through a local ordinance passed by their legislative body (such as a City Council, Town Meeting, or Water Commissioners). The process for ending a fluoridation program can be initiated by a petition from at least ten registered voters. Additionally, the bill grants water superintendents or water commissioners the authority to suspend fluoridation programs if they determine that the program poses potential risks to consumers, workers, infrastructure, or the environment. This legislation gives local governments and water management officials more direct control over their water treatment practices, allowing them to make decisions about fluoridation based on local concerns and professional assessments of potential risks.
