Starting January 1, 2028, these vehicles must be fitted with lateral protective devices (side guards), convex mirrors, crossover mirrors, and backup cameras. The Registry of Motor Vehicles (the "registrar") is tasked with adopting regulations for these safety devices, using standards from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe National Transportation Systems Center. The registrar will establish specifications for the size, design, and mounting of these safety features and may provide alternative compliance methods. This legislation aims to improve road safety by mandating additional protective equipment on large commercial vehicles in specific operational contexts.
