This bill establishes a permanent Commission on the Status of People Who Practice Islam in Massachusetts, consisting of 11 members appointed by various state officials, including the governor, legislative leaders, attorney general, and state secretary. The commissioners, who must be residents committed to the Muslim American community, will serve three-year terms and will not receive compensation but can be reimbursed for expenses. The commission's primary responsibilities include serving as a resource and advocate for Muslim communities by promoting research, informing leaders about issues affecting Muslim Americans, fostering community unity, serving as a liaison between government and Muslim organizations, recommending qualified Muslims for government positions, assessing state agency programs, advising on legislation, and generally working to highlight the contributions of Muslim Americans in Massachusetts. The commission will have the power to hold public meetings, seek information from state agencies, accept donations and grants, and maintain staff including a paid executive director. Initial members will be appointed by December 1, 2024, and the commission will be required to submit an annual report by June 2nd detailing its findings and activities. The bill aims to create a dedicated body to support and advance the civil rights and inclusion of Muslim Americans in the Commonwealth.
