This bill expands the definition of epinephrine delivery systems in North Carolina schools to include nasal sprays in addition to traditional auto-injectors with spring-activated needles. The legislation requires local school boards, charter schools, regional schools, and laboratory schools to provide emergency epinephrine delivery systems (at least two per school) and establish policies for their storage, administration, and use. School personnel will be trained to recognize anaphylaxis symptoms and how to administer these devices, and they will develop emergency action plans that include procedures for storing and using epinephrine delivery systems, recognizing anaphylaxis symptoms, and following up in emergencies. The bill also extends protections and immunity to schools, healthcare providers, and trained personnel who provide or administer epinephrine delivery systems in good faith. Additionally, the bill updates existing laws to reflect the broader definition of epinephrine delivery systems and applies to schools beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, aiming to improve emergency medical response for students experiencing potentially life-threatening allergic reactions.
