This bill establishes a new special vehicle registration plate for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and updates registration plate provisions for several "Divine Nine" historically Black Greek letter organizations (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity). The new Sigma Gamma Rho plate will cost an additional $20 and feature the sorority's symbol, name, and the phrase "Greater Service, Greater Progress." For each of these organizations' plates, $10 will go to the Special Registration Plate Account and $10 to the Collegiate and Cultural Attraction Plate Account. The bill also mandates that the Division of Motor Vehicles quarterly transfer the funds from the Collegiate and Cultural Attraction Plate Account to each organization's respective educational foundation, such as the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority National Education Fund, Inc. Additionally, the bill authorizes the Revisor of Statutes to alphabetize and renumber the special registration plates to ensure consistent organization. The legislation becomes effective immediately upon becoming law, and it is part of a broader effort to support and recognize these historically Black Greek letter organizations by providing a mechanism for members and supporters to show their affiliation through vehicle registration plates.
