This bill amends the New York General Business Law to strengthen consumer protections for automatic renewal and continuous service offers by requiring businesses to provide multiple easy cancellation methods. Specifically, businesses must now include a link on their public website for cancelling services, in addition to existing requirements like providing a toll-free phone number and email address. The bill also mandates that when consumers want to cancel an online service, they must be able to do so entirely online, including through a termination email provided by the business. If the service involves returning physical property or equipment, the business must provide clear written instructions for return and, if the business needs to retrieve its own equipment, must do so within 30 days of cancellation at no additional cost to the consumer. The business must also immediately issue a receipt to the consumer once any returned property is received. These changes aim to make service cancellations more transparent and consumer-friendly by reducing barriers and simplifying the termination process. The bill will take effect 90 days after becoming law.
