This bill amends the New York public housing law to ensure that domestic violence victims receive the highest priority level when applying for public housing or Section 8 housing in New York City. Specifically, the bill modifies existing language to mandate that applicants who are currently residing in city-owned, operated, or contracted domestic violence shelters, or in domestic violence shelters licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services, will be given the same preference ranking as any other priority applicant group when being considered for housing. The change means that domestic violence victims will no longer be disadvantaged in the housing selection process and will have an equal opportunity to be selected from the waiting list. This amendment aims to provide additional support and housing stability for individuals who have experienced domestic violence by ensuring they have access to housing resources on par with other priority groups.
