This bill amends the Texas Education Code to provide classroom teachers with a new right to appeal to the commissioner of education regarding their professional designation. Specifically, a teacher can file an appeal if they believe that, due to an error by their school district, open-enrollment charter school, or educational agency, they either failed to earn a designation or were issued a designation different from the one they believe they should have received based on their performance. The appeal mechanism allows teachers to challenge what they perceive as administrative mistakes in their professional classification. The bill will take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote in both legislative chambers, or otherwise will become effective on September 1, 2025. This provision gives teachers an additional avenue to seek review of their professional standing and potentially correct what they view as mistaken designations in the local optional teacher designation system.
