This bill modifies Nevada's existing regulations regarding the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) by public and law enforcement agencies. Currently, the Department of Public Safety maintains a list of prohibited countries, businesses, and entities from which agencies cannot purchase UAVs. The bill now allows agencies to purchase UAVs from businesses or entities on this prohibited list under specific conditions: first, any data collected must be stored exclusively within the United States and not accessible to third parties (which includes foreign entities or businesses); second, the agency must verify the business's compliance with these data storage requirements before purchasing; and third, the purchase must comply with federal law. Additionally, the bill encourages agencies to prioritize purchasing UAVs manufactured in the United States when possible. The legislation aims to provide more flexibility in UAV procurement while maintaining strict data privacy and security standards, addressing potential national security concerns related to foreign-manufactured drone technology. The changes will go into effect on July 1, 2025.
