This bill amends the New York State Penal Law to add a new exemption to the criminal possession of a firearm in a sensitive location, specifically for retired judges. Under the proposed change, retired judges from various court levels, including the Court of Appeals, Supreme Court, Court of Claims, County Court, Surrogate's Court, Family Court, New York City courts, District Court, and City Courts outside of New York City, will be exempt from prosecution for possessing a firearm in a sensitive location, provided they are duly licensed to possess a pistol or revolver under section 400.00 of the penal law. This exemption is added to the existing list of exceptions to the sensitive location firearm possession law, which already includes provisions for military personnel participating in ceremonies and individuals involved in biathlon sports. The bill would take effect immediately upon passage.
