This bill establishes an optional twenty-five-year retirement plan for fire marshals and their supervisors in Suffolk County, New York, allowing them to retire after 25 years of service regardless of age. This new plan, detailed in section 89-z of the retirement and social security law, defines "creditable service" to include time spent as a chief fire marshal, assistant chief fire marshal, fire marshal II, or fire marshal I in Suffolk County or participating towns and villages that elect to offer this benefit. It also allows credit for service as a paid firefighter or officer in an organized fire department. The retirement allowance will be a pension equal to one-fiftieth of a member's final average salary (FAS) for each year of service, up to half of their FAS after 25 years, with an additional one-sixtieth of FAS for each year beyond 25, not exceeding three-fourths of their FAS. Employers electing this plan will bear the associated costs, including an immediate past service cost and an increase in annual contributions. The bill also amends existing law to include these fire marshal titles in the list of occupations eligible for retirement without regard to age after completing a specified period of service.
