He held prominent leadership roles, including chairman of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Pecans, president of the Georgia Pecan Growers Association, and the first president of the National Watermelon Research and Promotion Board. Leger was recognized for his expertise through multiple appointments, including serving on transition teams between presidential administrations and receiving prestigious awards such as the National Watermelon Association Outstanding Service Award and the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Medallion of Honor Award. He was married to Marjorie for 57 years and had four children.
