This resolution honors the heroic efforts of volunteer firefighters, the New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing, and various New York State agencies during a significant brush fire that occurred on March 8, 2025, in Suffolk County, Long Island. The fire burned approximately 400 to 600 acres and required the emergency assistance of around 600 volunteers from 80 fire departments and 10 ambulance crews, along with support from multiple state agencies including the Department of Environmental Conservation, State Police, and Homeland Security. The emergency response was particularly challenging due to high wind velocities and lack of precipitation, which increased the fire's potential to spread rapidly. In response, a state of emergency was declared, and four New York National Guard helicopters conducted 88 water drops totaling over 24,000 gallons. The firefighters and emergency personnel worked extensively to create fire breaks and suppress the flames, successfully containing the fire by March 10, 2025. The resolution specifically recognizes the selfless dedication of these first responders who risked their personal time to protect life, nature, and property, and formally honors their valiant efforts by transmitting a copy of the resolution to Lawrence Saccente, Chief of Westhampton Beach Fire Department.
