This bill appropriates $1.2 million from Minnesota's renewable development account to the University of St. Thomas Center for Microgrid Research in fiscal year 2026, with funds specifically designated to enhance the center's capabilities. The funding is intended to support three key objectives: first, to provide industry partners opportunities to test near-commercial microgrid products in a real-world setting and increase innovative research; second, to procure advanced equipment and controls to extend the university's microgrid to additional buildings; and third, to expand educational opportunities for both traditional and nontraditional students while increasing public understanding of microgrid operations. Additionally, the bill extends the availability of previously appropriated grants for the University of St. Thomas Center for Microgrid Research from fiscal years 2024 and 2025 until June 30, 2028. A microgrid is a localized group of electricity sources and loads that normally operates connected to and synchronous with the traditional centralized grid, but can disconnect and function autonomously as physical and/or economic conditions dictate. The appropriation is a one-time funding allocation and will be available until June 30, 2028.
