This bill establishes a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) grant program administered by the New York State Urban Development Corporation to support educational initiatives that prepare students for postsecondary STEM education and careers. The program will provide competitive grants to school districts, higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and businesses, with priority given to high-need school districts. Grant recipients can use funds for activities such as developing STEM curriculum, providing professional development for educators, creating mentoring programs for new teachers, supporting student competitions and out-of-school STEM activities, developing workforce training programs, and establishing after-school STEM programs. The grants will be awarded for a five-year period starting in the 2025-2026 school year, with a total appropriation of $50 million. Each school district is limited to receiving no more than 40% of the total grant allocation, and individual STEM sites can receive up to $500,000. At the end of the five-year period, the program's effectiveness will be evaluated, and any unused funds will either be redistributed or returned to the state treasury if the program is discontinued.
