This bill removes the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York (SUNY) as an authorized charter entity for charter schools in the state. Currently, charter school applications can be submitted to either a local school district board of education or the SUNY Board of Trustees, with final approval from the Board of Regents. Under this legislation, only local school district boards of education and the Board of Regents will be authorized to approve and oversee charter school applications. The bill systematically eliminates references to SUNY's Board of Trustees throughout the education law, transferring all existing charter oversight responsibilities to the Board of Regents.
