AI Summary

This bill establishes an optional vehicle equipment inspection program in Georgia that provides insurance premium discounts for vehicle owners who obtain a voluntary equipment inspection. The bill creates a comprehensive framework for vehicle equipment inspections, defining detailed requirements for inspection stations, mechanic inspectors, and the inspection process. Specifically, the bill mandates that insurers offer premium discounts for vehicles with a current, valid certificate of vehicle equipment inspection, which will be issued based on the vehicle's age: five-year inspections for newer vehicles (less than five years old), two-year inspections for vehicles five to ten years old, and annual inspections for vehicles over ten years old. The Department of Public Safety will be responsible for establishing inspection standards, licensing mechanic inspectors, and creating vehicle equipment standards. Inspection stations will be required to meet specific certification requirements, maintain detailed records, and perform inspections according to department guidelines. Mechanic inspectors must be licensed and demonstrate competency, and violations of the inspection rules can result in misdemeanor penalties with fines ranging from $50 to $250. The program is set to begin on July 1, 2026, and provides flexibility for vehicle owners by making the inspections optional while incentivizing participation through insurance premium discounts.
