AI Summary

This bill provides a homestead tax exemption for qualifying residents of Lowndes County, Georgia, specifically targeting seniors aged 65 and older. Residents who are 65 years of age or older will receive a $40,000 exemption from county ad valorem (property) taxes, while those 70 and older will receive a $50,000 exemption. To qualify, residents must apply with the county tax commissioner and continue to occupy the property as their primary residence. The exemption does not apply to state, school district, or municipal property taxes and will take effect on January 1, 2027, but only if approved by a two-thirds majority vote in the Georgia legislature and subsequently approved by voters in a special referendum during the 2026 general primary election. If approved by voters, the exemption will be automatically renewed each year without requiring additional annual applications, though residents must notify the tax commissioner if they become ineligible. The bill aims to provide financial relief for senior homeowners in Lowndes County by reducing their property tax burden.
