This resolution creates a House Study Committee on Mental Health Workforce Development to address the critical shortage of mental health professionals in Georgia. The committee will consist of five members appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who will also designate a chairperson. The committee's primary purpose is to conduct a comprehensive study of the current mental health workforce challenges, including surveying undergraduate degrees, evaluating employment needs and opportunities, and recommending workforce development initiatives. Drawing from data showing that over half the U.S. population lives in a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area and that employment in mental health counseling is projected to grow 19 percent from 2023 to 2033, the committee will investigate ways to increase the number of qualified mental health professionals, particularly in rural Georgia. The committee is authorized to hold meetings as needed, with legislative members receiving standard allowances, and is required to file a report with findings and potential legislative recommendations by December 1, 2025. If no report is approved, the chairperson may file meeting minutes with the House Clerk, ensuring transparency and documentation of the committee's work in addressing this critical workforce issue.
