Bill Summary

This bill provides that certain public safety workers who contract coronavirus disease 2019 from June 5, 2021 until January 31, 2022 as a result of contracting the disease will be entitled to full accidental disability benefits under certain circumstances. Specifically, a worker will be entitled to those benefits if the worker: (1) contracts coronavirus disease 2019 during a time period in which the worker is working in a place of employment other than the worker's own residence; (2) is a member of the police; and (3) is permanently and totally disabled as a direct result of contracting coronavirus disease 2019.

AI Summary

This bill provides accidental disability benefits to police officers who contract COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) under specific conditions between June 5, 2021, and January 31, 2022. To qualify for full accidental disability benefits, a police officer must have contracted COVID-19 while working at a location other than their home and become permanently and totally disabled as a direct result of the disease. The legislation is designed to affirm and protect the rights of public safety workers without reducing or limiting any existing legal benefits. The bill takes effect immediately and applies retroactively to June 5, 2021, meaning eligible police officers can seek these benefits for COVID-19 infections that occurred during the specified time period. This bill appears to recognize the heightened risk of COVID-19 exposure for police officers and provides financial protection for those who suffer severe, permanent disability from contracting the virus while performing their professional duties.
