This bill converts the existing Governor's Council on an Age-Friendly Minnesota into a more formalized Age-Friendly Minnesota Council, establishing a comprehensive framework for supporting and improving conditions for older adults across the state. The new council will consist of 15 voting members, including representatives from various state agencies like the Board on Aging, Department of Commerce, and Department of Health, as well as six additional public members appointed by the governor to represent diverse perspectives such as older adults in communities experiencing disparities, caregivers, and local governments. The council's duties will include elevating the voices of older adults, promoting equity, identifying collaboration opportunities, catalyzing age-friendly work at the local level, and making policy and budget recommendations to advance age-friendly initiatives. The bill also creates two grant programs: age-friendly community grants to help communities develop supportive structures and services for older adults, and technical assistance grants to support communities in applying for and implementing age-friendly projects. To support these efforts, the bill appropriates $1.5 million for community grants and $863,000 for technical assistance grants in each of fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The current Governor's Council is extended until June 30, 2025, with a smooth transition plan for members to be appointed to the new council.
