This bill allows school districts and charter schools to grant academic credit to junior high, middle school, and high school students for completing approved outdoor recreational activities outside of school hours. The outdoor activities must involve significant time outdoors and teach skills related to outdoor education, such as identifying native plants and animals, building trails, restoring habitats, learning outdoor survival techniques, practicing recreational skills like hiking and archery, or bird watching. The activities would count towards elective course credits, and each school district or charter school's governing body must establish rules regarding the maximum number of credits that can be earned, the application process for credit, and procedures for obtaining parental consent. Importantly, the bill does not require schools to provide, facilitate, or spend money on these outdoor recreational activities, but gives them the option to recognize and credit students' extracurricular outdoor learning experiences. The bill will become effective on July 1, 2025, providing schools time to develop their specific policies and guidelines for implementing this new credit opportunity.
