This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to enhance seizure management training in schools by changing requirements for school nurses and other school employees. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year and every two years thereafter, school nurses will be required (instead of merely allowed) to complete a Department of Health-approved training course on seizure management, which includes information about seizure recognition, creating a seizure action plan, and related first aid. Similarly, professional employees who have direct student contact will now be mandated (rather than optional) to complete a training course about seizure awareness, recognition, and first aid. The bill also includes a liability protection clause, specifying that these new requirements do not expand civil liability for school entities or employees, and that existing good Samaritan and emergency care civil immunity laws will apply to school employees providing seizure-related treatment consistent with school policy. The legislation will take effect 60 days after its enactment.
