This bill amends Pennsylvania's criminal code to expand the list of public officials who are afforded special protection under the aggravated assault statute. Specifically, the bill adds county commissioners, county council members, mayors, and municipal council members to the existing list of protected officials. By including these local government officials, the law provides enhanced legal protection against assault for these elected and appointed public servants. If someone commits an assault against one of these newly added officials while they are performing their official duties, the assault would be considered a more serious criminal offense with potentially heightened penalties. The amendment takes effect 60 days after being signed into law, giving time for local law enforcement and judicial systems to become aware of and prepare to implement the new provisions.
