This bill increases the penalties for embezzlement of public funds by modifying the existing Minnesota statute 609.54. Currently, if someone embezzles $2,500 or less, they can be sentenced to up to five years in prison or a fine of up to $10,000. The bill introduces two new penalty tiers: for embezzlement between $2,500 and $100,000, the punishment can be up to ten years in prison or a fine of up to $20,000; and for embezzlement of $100,000 or more, the punishment can be up to 20 years in prison or a fine of up to $50,000. The new penalty structure aims to create more proportional consequences based on the amount of funds embezzled. The changes will take effect on August 1, 2025, and will apply to crimes committed on or after that date, giving potential offenders clear notice of the new, more stringent penalties for embezzling public funds.
