This bill amends existing Alaska state law to increase occupational disability benefits for peace officers and firefighters. Currently, disabled employees receive a monthly disability benefit equal to 40 percent of their gross monthly compensation at the time of termination. The bill modifies this provision to provide that after the first 12 months of disability, peace officers and firefighters will receive an increased monthly benefit of 75 percent of their gross monthly compensation at the time of termination. The bill also ensures that while receiving these enhanced disability benefits, employees remain fully vested in employer contributions and continue to receive employer contributions to their individual retirement accounts without deductions from their disability payments. This change appears designed to provide more financial support for public safety workers who become disabled in the line of duty, recognizing the potentially higher risks and physical demands of their professions. The bill will take effect immediately upon enactment.
