This bill amends the general municipal law to provide state reimbursement for fire districts, departments, and companies that are required to provide enhanced cancer disability benefits for volunteer firefighters. Specifically, the bill allows these local fire organizations to receive annual reimbursement from the state for the insurance coverage costs associated with providing cancer disability benefits to volunteer firefighters, as mandated by section 205-cc of the general municipal law. To receive reimbursement, fire districts must apply to the office of fire prevention and control, submitting proof of their insurance policies. The reimbursement is limited to the amount spent in the prior fiscal year on insurance coverage necessary to comply with the cancer disability benefits requirement. The office of fire prevention and control, in collaboration with the department of financial services, will establish a uniform application process and create rules and regulations to implement this reimbursement program. The bill will take effect on the first day of January following its passage, with provisions allowing for immediate preparation of necessary rules and regulations.
