This resolution honors the life and public service of Don Wesely, a long-time Nebraska legislator and mayor of Lincoln who served from 1979 to 1999. Born in David City, Nebraska, Wesely was elected to the Nebraska Legislature at age twenty-four and held leadership roles on several important committees, including Rules, Retirement, Economic Development, and Health and Human Services. After leaving the Legislature in 1999, he became Lincoln's forty-ninth mayor, during which he accomplished significant projects such as opening Haymarket Park facilities, bringing minor league baseball to the city, initiating the $200 million Antelope Valley Project, and developing public infrastructure including libraries, parks, pools, and community centers. The resolution, passed by the 109th Legislature, formally honors Wesely's lifelong commitment to public service, extends condolences to his family following his passing on March 19, 2025, and commits to sending an official copy of the resolution to his family as a gesture of respect and remembrance.
