This resolution honors the life and memory of Michael Ernest Sumner, a distinguished Georgia citizen who passed away on February 22, 2025. Born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1958, Sumner moved to Decatur, Georgia in 1959 and had a notable career as a lawyer, graduating from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce and the University of Georgia's Lumpkin School of Law. He established his own law practice in Newnan in 1996 and served on the Coweta County Board of Education for 16 years, including five years as board chair, where he was instrumental in founding arts programs and developing educational initiatives. Sumner was deeply committed to his family, church, and community, married to his wife Leah for 39 years and father to three sons, and was an active member of Central Baptist Church. He was also a passionate sports fan and known for his compassion and generosity. The resolution expresses the Senate's deepest condolences and directs the Secretary of the Senate to provide a copy of the resolution to Sumner's family, formally recognizing his significant contributions to his community and honoring his memory.
