This bill modifies North Carolina's laws regarding licensure for marriage and family therapists by making several key changes to the state's reciprocity and licensing processes. Specifically, the bill requires (rather than allows) the state board to issue reciprocal licenses to marriage and family therapists who meet certain criteria, including being actively practicing for at least two continuous years (reduced from five years) and currently licensed in another state. The bill also expands the acceptable examination options for reciprocal licensure to include not just the National Marriage and Family Therapy examination, but also the clinical examination used by California's licensing board. Additionally, the bill updates the criminal history record check provisions to include reciprocity applicants under the relevant licensing statutes. The North Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board is authorized to adopt rules to implement these changes, which will become effective on October 1, 2025, and apply to licensure applications submitted on or after that date.
