This bill creates a new Fugitive Apprehension Unit within the Louisiana Department of Justice's investigation division, led by the attorney general. The unit will consist of specially trained and commissioned peace officers (P.O.S.T.-certified) who will be responsible for tracking down and apprehending fugitives through multiple strategies. Specifically, the unit will coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to locate and arrest fugitives, provide assistance to agencies pursuing fugitives, execute arrest warrants, and prioritize apprehending individuals wanted for violent felony offenses like murder, rape, and armed robbery. The unit will also have the authority to establish or participate in multi-agency fugitive task forces and can even pursue and arrest individuals who knowingly help fugitives avoid arrest or prosecution. The special agents in the unit will be fully commissioned peace officers with all legal powers granted to law enforcement in Louisiana, enabling them to effectively carry out their fugitive apprehension mission across the state.
