This resolution establishes the Senate Paid Student Teaching Study Committee to investigate the feasibility and benefits of compensating student teachers in Georgia, recognizing that current unpaid student teaching creates financial hardship, discourages individuals from low and middle-income backgrounds from entering the profession, and contributes to a growing teacher shortage. The committee, composed of six Senate members appointed by the majority and minority caucus leaders, will study the financial and logistical challenges faced by student teachers, the impact of unpaid student teaching on educator recruitment and retention, the relationship between paid internships and teacher preparedness, cost estimates and funding for a paid program, and best practices from other states. The committee will operate under the direction of a chairperson designated by the President of the Senate, hold meetings as needed, and its members will receive standard legislative allowances, with funding for the study coming from the Senate's budget. The committee is tasked with producing a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, by December 1, 2026.
