AI Summary

This bill establishes a comprehensive framework for managing nuisance alligators in South Carolina by creating clear definitions and procedures for handling potentially dangerous alligators. The bill defines key terms such as "nuisance alligator" (an alligator posing a threat to human life or property), and establishes a process for handling complaints through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The DNR will receive nuisance alligator complaints on a standardized form, investigate and verify each complaint using specific indicators like alligator size, aggression, and proximity to human structures. Specially trained and authorized "nuisance alligator hunters" with depredation permits will be responsible for capturing and addressing these alligators, with a preference for relocation to natural habitats. If relocation is not feasible due to ecological risks, the alligator may be humanely euthanized following veterinary guidelines. Nuisance alligator hunters must work under DNR supervision, report their actions biannually, and can have their permits revoked for non-compliance. The bill also amends existing alligator management regulations to integrate these new provisions, ensuring a structured and scientifically-informed approach to managing human-alligator interactions while prioritizing both public safety and wildlife conservation.
