This bill allows the town of Becket to appoint up to two alternate members to its conservation commission, which is a local government body typically responsible for protecting natural resources and managing conservation lands. Currently, state law (section 8C of chapter 40 of the General Laws) may not explicitly permit such alternate positions. Under this proposed legislation, these alternate members would be able to serve staggered terms of up to three years, and the conservation commission chair can designate an alternate to serve in specific circumstances, such as when a regular commission member is absent, unable to act, has a conflict of interest, or when there is a vacancy on the commission.
