This resolution recognizes and commends the St. John Cultural Arts Center located at the Promise Land Historic Site in Tennessee, a restored historic church building originally constructed in the 1880s and rebuilt in 1935 after a fire. The center, which was dedicated on September 8, 2024, serves as a permanent home for cultural activities including choral concerts, art exhibitions, and traveling history displays, and is also available for rentals throughout the year. The building has significant historical importance, as it was once home to the St. John Methodist congregation and is the last remaining of three churches that served a community settled by formerly enslaved persons and veterans of the United States Colored Troops of the Union Army. The Promise Land Heritage Association (PLHA) completed the renovation of the building in December 2023 through a contract with Leatherwood, Inc., and the center's connection to John Lewis and The Promise Land Singers further enhances its cultural significance. The resolution specifically praises the PLHA for its efforts to preserve and share the rich history of this Tennessee historical site.
