This bill establishes a specialized unemployment insurance program for workers in the iron ore mining industry, providing additional benefits to workers laid off after May 19, 2025, and through May 30, 2026. The program applies to workers directly employed in iron ore mining or those working for suppliers to the iron ore mining industry who are laid off due to industry operational reductions. To qualify, applicants must have established a benefit account with at least 50% of wage credits from an eligible employer and have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits. The additional benefits will match the weekly amount of their previous regular unemployment benefits, with a maximum available amount equivalent to 26 weeks of payment. The bill includes provisions for workers who might qualify for a new regular benefit account, specifying how they can transition between different unemployment benefit types. Importantly, these additional benefits will not be used to calculate future unemployment tax rates for most employers and will not be charged to government or nonprofit employer accounts. Workers who are already eligible for federal Trade Readjustment Allowance benefits cannot receive these additional unemployment benefits. The program becomes effective immediately following its final enactment.
