This bill amends the New York vehicle and traffic law to expand the eligibility for distinctive license plates currently available to gold star mothers. The legislation broadens the definition of who can receive these special license plates to include gold star parents (as defined in 10 USC 1126), children of gold star parents, and their spouses. Previously, the law was limited to gold star mothers and their spouses. The bill allows these eligible individuals to request license plates that bear the words "gold star family member" upon application to the commissioner, without any additional service charge. Multiple distinctive plates can be issued for vehicles registered in the name of the gold star family member or their spouse. The plates will be issued in the same manner as standard number plates, with the regular registration fee, and the changes will take effect 90 days after the bill becomes law.
