This bill requires the North Carolina standard course of study to include age-appropriate educational units about Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) contributions and experiences from elementary through high school. Specifically, the curriculum must cover five key areas: the early contributions of Asian immigrants in critical industries like railroad construction and manual labor; the historical challenges and perseverance of Asian immigrant communities; the role of Asian Americans in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement; the demographic significance of Asian Americans as the fastest growing minority group in the United States; and the broad contributions of AAPI individuals in various domains including government, arts, sciences, and socio-economic development in both North Carolina and the broader United States. The bill is set to take effect when signed into law and will apply to courses beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, giving educators and school systems time to develop and implement the new curriculum requirements.
