This bill, known as the Student Fee Transparency Act, requires the University of Alaska to provide more detailed information to students about fees and billing. Specifically, at least 30 days before the Board of Regents imposes a new fee or increases an existing fee, the university must send an electronic mail notice to all currently enrolled students that includes the amount of the new fee or increase, the reason for the fee change, the purpose of the revenue generated, and whether the fee change is permanent or temporary (and if temporary, when it is expected to end). Additionally, the bill mandates that the University of Alaska provide each student with a billing statement that itemizes all tuition and fees charged. The new requirements will take effect on July 1, 2027, giving the university ample time to implement the new transparency measures. The goal of the bill appears to be improving financial communication and helping students better understand the costs associated with their education.
