This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to enhance requirements for sudden cardiac arrest prevention and response in schools. The legislation mandates that coaches of athletic activities complete a sudden cardiac arrest training course annually and be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use every two years through recognized organizations like the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Similarly, school employees supervising school-sponsored activities must also complete the same training and certification requirements. The bill expands the definition of "athletic activity" to include interscholastic athletics, school-sponsored athletic contests, cheerleading, club sports, and related practices and scrimmages. The school entity must maintain and publicly share records of coaches' certifications. These provisions aim to improve emergency preparedness and potentially save lives by ensuring school staff are trained to recognize and respond to sudden cardiac events. The bill will take effect 60 days after its passage.
