This bill amends Michigan's penal code to strengthen penalties for making false reports to law enforcement or emergency services. The bill introduces more severe criminal penalties for intentionally making false reports that trigger emergency responses, with escalating punishments based on the consequences of the false report. If a false report leads to a physical injury during the emergency response, the person can be charged with a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison or a $20,000 fine. If the false report results in serious bodily impairment, the penalty increases to up to 10 years in prison or a $25,000 fine. In the most extreme cases, if a false report leads to a person's death during the emergency response, the responsible individual can be charged with a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine between $25,000 and $50,000. The bill also adds a new provision specifically addressing false reports made with the intent to cause an emergency response, even if no response actually occurs. Additionally, the law allows courts to order individuals (or in the case of juveniles, their parents) to pay the costs of emergency response services resulting from the false report. The bill takes effect 90 days after being enacted into law.
