This resolution recognizes and honors seven law enforcement officers from Oconee and Pickens County Sheriff's Offices who will receive the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association 2024 Medal of Valor Award for their extraordinary actions during a dangerous incident on November 16, 2023. During a traffic stop involving an uncooperative driver, the situation escalated when the suspect fled at high speed and then fired multiple shots at the deputies. Corporal Lucas Watts was shot in the head during the exchange, and his fellow officers immediately worked to transport him for medical help while continuing to engage the suspect. Other officers, including First Sergeant David Carr and Deputy First Class Tyler Bishop, located the suspect and bravely exchanged gunfire without cover, ultimately injuring the suspect. The Medal of Valor Award is presented to deputies who perform actions above and beyond the call of duty, exhibiting exceptional courage and risking their personal safety to protect human life. The resolution formally acknowledges these officers' heroism and determination in protecting citizens and calls for a copy of the resolution to be presented to each of the seven recognized officers.
