This bill establishes a Purple Star Program for public schools in Michigan designed to support military-connected students and their families. By January 1, 2026, the state's education department must create a program that allows public schools to apply for a special designation by meeting specific requirements. To qualify, a school must designate a staff member as a military liaison who will identify military-connected students, serve as a point of contact, coordinate support services, and ensure these students have access to appropriate resources. The school must also maintain a website section with information about enrollment, academic planning, and support services for military families. Additionally, the school needs to develop a student-led transition program, provide professional development for staff about military-connected students, and implement at least one initiative to recognize and support military families, such as hosting monthly recognition events, partnering with armed forces branches, or creating student clubs focused on military family engagement. The bill defines "military-connected pupils" as students who are family members of current or former armed forces members, or who are family members of service members killed in the line of duty, and includes all branches of the military and their reserve components.
