This bill amends the New York State education law to modify the requirements for charter school relocation. Specifically, the bill expands the existing public hearing requirement to include situations where a charter school relocates within a city with a population of one million or more (which is New York City) to a different community education council district. Currently, a public hearing is mandatory when a charter school relocates to a different school district, and this bill adds an additional hearing requirement for significant geographic moves within large cities. The bill requires that the new district or community education council district hold a public hearing to solicit community comments about the proposed relocation, and ensures that the charter entity considers these comments when reviewing the charter school's application for revision. The purpose of these requirements is to provide transparency and allow local communities to provide input on charter school relocations. The bill will take effect 90 days after it becomes law.
