This bill directs the Maine Department of Education to create a working group to comprehensively study the Maine Learning Results (MLR), a statewide educational standards system. The working group will be composed of educators, education experts representing diverse Maine communities and traditions, and curriculum leaders. The study must review the purpose and effectiveness of the MLR, examine its overall structure and accessibility, assess the inclusion and representation of diverse cultures across content areas (including Wabanaki, African American, and Asian American studies), and evaluate whether statutory revisions are necessary. The working group is required to submit an interim report by February 1, 2026, to the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs, and a final report by February 1, 2027, which must include detailed findings, recommendations for potential MLR revisions, and an implementation plan. The committee will have the option to propose related legislation in both the 132nd and 133rd Legislatures based on these reports, with the ultimate goal of improving educational standards and representation in Maine's learning framework.
