She survived extraordinary challenges, including being hidden in a six-foot bunker in a Catholic convent for two years, witnessing death and brutality, and suffering from diseases like typhus and malaria. After being liberated in 1945 and reuniting with her family, she eventually traveled to Palestine, spent time in a refugee camp in Cyprus, and reached Israel in 1948. She later moved to New York in 1962 and then to Birmingham, Alabama in 1992. Throughout her life, Hirsch has been a passionate advocate for Holocaust education, sharing her testimony to ensure future generations understand this tragic history. Now 91 years old, she is recognized as a testament to human resilience and the importance of remembering historical atrocities. The Alabama House of Representatives resolves to honor her extraordinary courage and commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust.
